Family Mediation with Dads’ Consultancy

What is a MIAM ?

Before you can apply to the court for a Child Arrangements Order, you’re usually required to attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM).

Mediation is a requirement and you won’t be able to make the court application without having tried mediation first. It sounds formal, but it’s simply an initial meeting with a qualified mediator.

Why Do I Need A MIAM?

During the MIAM the mediator will listen to your story. They’ll assess if mediation might be suitable for your situation, and explore if they could help you reach an agreement without going to court.

They will take your ideas and explore their potential to form a constructive starting point for dialogue, and assess how they might contribute to reaching a resolution that prioritises the children’s best interests

Following your MIAM, there are two main paths

Proceed with Mediation

If both you and the other party agree to attempt mediation after attending your individual MIAMs, our partner mediator will support you through the process until you reach an agreement. Mediation gives you both the opportunity to make decisions yourselves, instead of leaving it to the court.

Apply to Court

If mediation is not appropriate, not agreed upon by the other party, or if the initial sessions do not resolve the issues, the mediator will issue your MIAM certificate. This certificate is required — you cannot submit an application for a Child Arrangements Order without it.
