How It Works

Once the payment is arranged, the mediator will be notified and will schedule your MIAM appointment. You will receive an email with forms that need to be completed and returned to the mediator.

If the other party agrees to mediate and you start the process, the mediator will secure 2 free sessions through the government voucher scheme.

Should additional sessions be necessary, you and the other party will need to pay £180 per parent for each 90-minute session.

You can assess the progress during the two free sessions, and if it seems like you’re not making headway, you can request your certificate from the mediator without incurring additional mediation fees.

If you believe that additional paid sessions could help you reach an agreement, it’s definitely worth considering.

This approach remains more cost-effective than going to court, and it allows you and the other party to make the decisions, rather than having the court dictate the outcome.

Why mediation

The journey typically begins with mediation, where both parties attempt to resolve issues without going to court. 

Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) is a requirement when dealing with child arrangements. If successful, an agreement is reached, and the process ends here.

MIAM Certificate and Moving Forward

In cases where one party refuses to engage in mediation or if mediation proves unsuccessful, the mediator will issue a Free MIAM certificate.

This certificate is essential for proceeding to court to seek a Child Arrangements Order, as you cannot complete the court application without it.
