What Is Parental Responsibility (PR)?
In the United Kingdom, parental responsibility refers to the rights and duties that parents have in relation to their children. This includes the responsibility to care for, protect, and maintain the child, as well as to make decisions on their behalf.
Who Has PR?
Under UK law, mothers automatically have parental responsibility for their children. Fathers married to the mother at the time of the child’s birth also acquire PR automatically.
If the parents are not married, fathers can still acquire PR by being named on the birth certificate or by applying through a court order.
For step-by-step advice, see our guide for fathers on how to obtain parental responsibility.
What Does PR Do?
Parental responsibility covers major decisions in a child’s life, such as where they live, go to school, and receive medical care. It also includes day-to-day responsibilities like ensuring a safe home and meeting their basic needs.
Financial support is part of the picture, too — ensuring a child is clothed, fed, and educated. Ultimately, PR is about acting in the child’s best interests across every aspect of their life.
Just having PR doesn’t guarantee contact. If you’re being blocked from seeing your child, our Child Arrangements Order guide explains how to secure your time legally.
Can You Lose Parental Responsibility?
While rare, it is possible for PR to be limited or removed if a child’s welfare is at risk. This usually happens if the child is taken into care by social services. In such cases, the state can intervene to protect the child’s safety.
Why PR Matters
PR is more than a legal label — it’s about being recognised as an active, responsible parent. It enables you to contribute to your child’s life in meaningful ways, from daily care to long-term planning.
While mothers automatically have PR, many fathers need to take proactive steps to obtain it. Once in place, PR offers security, clarity, and a pathway to better co-parenting and decision-making.
